“Between Spaces and Memories” 2026
In her series “Between Spaces and Memories,” Hul Kanha draws inspiration from Cambodia’s New Khmer Architecture of the 1950s and 1960s. During this era, architects like Vann Molyvann uniquely blended modernist principles with traditional Khmer heritage. Kanha explores these architectural forms in relation to memory, displacement, and shifting cultural identity.
She views architecture as a living frame that holds a community’s resilience and stories. Inspired by her mother’s observation that we often value everyday surroundings only after they disappear, Kanha reflects on how the loss of familiar
spaces awakens memories and reveals what we truly cherish.
To bridge the past and present, she utilizes mixed-media techniques on
recycled paper, incorporating photo transfers, sewing, and painting. Through
these materials, Kanha’s artwork honors physical structures as vital, living spaces
that preserve historical narratives and community relationships.
