Kanha Hul (b. 1999, Siem Reap) is a multidisciplinary artist. Her creative praxis and interests evolve around themes of community, women, the environment, and memory. Her works often delve into the complexities of these themes through a variety of mediums, including photography, performance art, painting, paper cutting, collage, stencil techniques, participatory projects, and, more recently, installation and sculpture.
Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English at the Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia, Hul believes that art, either as an expression, abstractly and artifactually, or as a space, is vital for self-fulfillment and self-mastery while providing how to intercommunicate and reconnect to one’s soul, identity and community. Hul’s ongoing interest, which has become her artistic signature, concerns the position of women in (Khmer) society: she challenges society’s deeply held beliefs—especially about women’s bodies and roles—while celebrating women’s lives, experiences, and legacies.
Besides her first solo exhibition at Silapak Trotchaek Pneik by YK Art House (STP Cambodia) in 2023, Hul was an invited speaker and art instructor at the United Nations Women i4i Conference in Phnom Penh. In 2020, she taught art at the NOMADIX Arts Festival in Siem Reap. She is also the recipient of the Treeline Urban Resort Artist Grant (2020). Kanha’s works have been featured in group exhibitions throughout Cambodia and at international galleries, including Galerie Lee in Paris and Artxchange Gallery in Seattle, USA.
